How do you clean the floors in your art storage areas? You conservators out there: what is considered best practices? The (vast!) floors at our fine art warehouse are sealed concrete. Are there commercial grade vacuums (HEPA I assume) or (gasp) scrubbers that you recommend? Thanks in advance! Maureen

    Hi Maureen

Our facilities staff are moving to specialized floor cleaning machines that do not use soaps/determents, just a fine mist of pressurized water below the machine that is immediately dried. It is working well and avoids the soap/detergent scums that are the norm from cleaning products.

If you are interested in the particular machine, let me know.

Just an alert: we are sometimes asked to treat paintings that have a splatter pattern on the lower part which is residue from floor cleaning/polishing/waxing operations. Invisible in the moment but problematic later.

So if you have valuable objects near the floor, you might want to encase or protect them in a suitable way before starting any cleaning project, if you haven't done so already.

    Best, Mary

I have a question on this topic: does anyone use the Roomba-type vacuum cleaners for storage areas that areas where custodial staff is not allowed but collections staff are too busy to vacuum on a regular basis?
