Exhibit labels question

  • 1.  Exhibit labels question

    Hi all,
I am wondering how others hang their exhibit labels. We typically mount the labels on foam core than adhere the labels to the wall using double stick foam tape. I don't like the foam tape since it leaves a mess on the wall. We tried using Command Strips but they lose their adhesive quality if you have to reposition the label. Any advice for hanging foam core other than frames? Alternatives to foam tape would be ideal.

    Thanks!!

I've used black foam tape with acrylic adhesive for years. It's much easier to remove than the white stuff. You can usually just roll it off with your thumb. Be careful about removing a whole gallery full that way, though. You can raise a nasty blister on your thumb. A little ball of that knubby non-slip drawer liner (white) works well for removing a lot of the tape. We get our tape from Uline (cat. no. S-16149BL). I'm sure there are other sources out there as well.

    Hi Meghan,

We typically mount our labels to either foam core or mat board. Wall panels are sent to a printer and are mounted to foam core. Smaller object and case labels are fabricated in-house and are mounted to mat board. If you are looking for durability, I recommend Sintra PVC board over foam core.

I've had luck (in climate controlled exhibition spaces) using painter's tape as a barrier between the wall and regular foam tape. Removable double-sided foam tape is ideal if you want to be able to remove a label cleanly from the wall. It is a less damaging alternative to regular foam tape. One side (label side) is high tack and one side (wall side) is low tack.

For temporary exhibits, a generous amount of painter's tape rolls applied to the back of a label sticks to a wall very well, removes easily without damage, and allows the label to be re-used by adding new tape rolls before re-application. This method is also a good way to play around with label placement before switching to permanent mounting solutions.

Command strips made of Velcro might be useful if you only need to shift the label a little bit. The velcro strip adhered to the back of the label would be re-usable for as a long as you need it, but you would need to replace either the hook or loop side depending on which was attached to the wall. You can also buy velcro tape on a roll, but I can't attest to the adhesive's strength over time to a wall or a label.

Hope this helps--I'm curious to hear what other people use!

We put blue painter's tape on the wall first then attached self-adhesive Velcro to the back of our labels and then to blue tape.  I figure this should work with double sided tape too.  We left this exhibit up for 2 years and two of the walls were exterior plaster walls that were poorly insulated and had no problem with the blue tape holding.  When we removed the exhibit, the blue tape came off with almost no issues.  This was an idea from an intern and I doubted that it would hold for the time we needed but she proved me wrong.

We use Blu-tack.  It holds well and does not leave a residue.

    Hi Meghan,

We have been using Glue Dots Adhesives to hang our foam core labels. They have been holding up on both wood panel walls and painted sheetrock (drywall) walls. They come in a variety of sizes but we mostly use the ½" size for simple object labels. The largest labels we have hung with them were 11" x 17" and we used two dots per corner for those. One dot per corner works on smaller labels. Sometimes the dots stick to the walls when we remove the labels but if you pull at them slowly they usually come right off. The dots come on a roll in a bright green box. I believe we get them from Amazon.

    Good luck!

    Hi Meghan,

We attach our labels the same way you do, but we use 3M's VHB tape. It has a great hold and usually doesn't mess up our walls if removed properly. When we need to remove a label we take a piece of fishing line and shimmy it between the label and the wall, this will roll the tape up without damaging the walls. Here's a link: https://www.uline.com/BL_6038/3M-4910-VHB-Acrylic-Tape?keywords=3m

    Hope this helps!

    Dear Meghan,

    Our technique is as follows:

We place a couple of small strips of blue painters tape on the wall, smaller than the size of the label. We then use one of two methods to attach the label to the taped area on the wall: either double stick foam tape or reusable "sticky tack". The sticky tack is repositionable.

The tape protects the wall from adhesive and also works as a substrate for sticky tack if the wall has a highly glossed paint surface.

This makes for easy removal and no residue left on the wall.

    Hi Meghan,

I use a double sided foam tape called Remo 2 that I absolutely love for this use. It removes cleanly from the wall (after 3-9 months) and has been very gentle on paint. It also comes in different thickness, with the thinner versions making for a more flush presentation than the commercially available 3M tapes I've tried. Our labels themselves are usually paper mounted on foam core as well.

Have you tried the command velcro (picture hanging) strips? Re-positionable and a clean release!

    Hi Meghan,

I've run into similar problems with wall damage and also larger panels falling off the walls when hanging foam labels. My solution is to apply a wire to the back of the panel using epoxy and then just hanging it with nails or hooks. This allows me to easily re-position and cause much less wall damage. I hope this helps!

    Hi Meghan,

A sticky question indeed! We haven't found a perfect solution for all situations but here are some of the things we do when screws and/or magnets won't work:

    1) Sometime we put down a liner of 3M blue painters tape (burnish it with a squeegee) and then apply the double stick tape of choice on top of the painters tape.  We use3M VHB 4905 as the painters tape usually.

    2) Where the painters tape liner method wont work, we use 3M VHB 4905 (or similar clear 3M mounting tapes) marketed as "optically clear foam vhb" by McMaster Carr). These can be difficult to remove, but they can be slowly rolled off as a cohesive mass rather than splitting apart the way the other foam tapes do. If the tape is on an unsound paint layer however, there's little hope for preserving the wall finish.

    Good luck!

Probably not what you want to hear, but I've had good luck with Command Strips. I use the ones that have Velcro. That way the strip on the wall does not have to be removed and reattached to the wall if I want to reposition (or change) the label. We attach our labels to small mats (the type used in a picture frame).

If you can not find Command Strips with Velcro, use TWO standard Command Strips; one on the wall and one behind the label. Secure the hook section of the Velcro to one Command Strip and the loop section of the Velcro to the other Command Strip. Press onto the wall.

I position the Command Strip so the removal "tab" is hidden behind the label and I only use strips at the top. It makes it easier to remove the mat by tilting the mat so it detaches from the Velcro. When I used a strip at each corner, I found I had to be very careful when removing the mat.

The best thing I have come across in many years is 3M 4910 VHB tape. It is a clear acrylic gel tape that is stretchy and will roll off of any surface without leaving a residue. Passes Oddy tests. Pricey but, but 3 - 4 strips 1/2" long is more than enough for most labels. I stole this from the Getty and have turned a bunch of people on to it over the years. It is fascinating stuff! I just went into a gallery and replaced two labels today. It was easy and resulted in no damage to paint surface.

This is a great discussion but I was wondering if anyone has used digital labels? There are several companies supplying digital labels such as this one: https://www.visionect.com/blog/epaper-museum-label/

I'm intrigued at the idea of not having to reprint and reapply physical labels every time a new object is placed on exhibit. I would love to hear about anyone's experiences using digital labels.
