  • 1.  Visual Dictionary for Condition Reporting?

    Posted 02-26-2019 17:32
I recently attended the College Art Association conference in New York City and presented a workshop on Condition Reporting for Artists.  During the course of the workshop a contemporary artist asked me if a visual glossary existed of all of the many terms that are presented in SERA's thorough Condition Reporting workbook.  To my knowledge a visual glossary which would help an artist identify and distinguish among condition terms such as buckling/cockling/deformation does not exist .  Currently, I am in the process of creating such a document for use by artists.  I would like to inquire if anyone else has produced such a document?  If so, I would love to hear from you.  Thank you, Ingrid Neuman, RISD Museum of Art

    Ingrid,
Our Australian colleagues have a very nice webpage with an illustrated glossary here: https://aiccm.org.au/conservation/visual-glossary
I have used it for teaching and it is pretty thorough. There are also scattered definitions and images throughout the AIC wiki, though I'm not sure if there's a comprehensive visual glossary like AICCM's.

One nice example of such a glossary for paper was published by Bern University of the Arts:

Catalogue of Damage Terminology for Works of Art and Cultural Property: Paper. ISBN 978-9522804-1-6

    Hi Ingrid,
Don't forget the AIC Wiki's Lexicon!  The Lexicon is an illustrated glossary of terms related to condition and conservation processes that is aimed at the general public with  short definitions, no longer than a few paragraphs with images but the entries created also include more contextual commentary for those terms and translation of terms into other languages. You can jump directly to the list of terms.

As AIC's e-Editor I am always interested in hearing feedback from AIC and non-AIC members on this resource, including terms to be added, updates to definitions and, critically, images that can illustrate the issues.  Everyone is welcome to contribute you need not be a conservator!  Please feel free to contact me off-list at rarenstein@culturalheritage.org

    Thank you!
