Committees

About Our Committees

Committees either focus on a particular topic of interest for our members or conduct ongoing business for the organization. They are led by volunteers who along with the help of board and staff liaisons carry out the committee's work.

Committee Types

  • Standing - our bylaws name three standing committees: Membership, Ethics & Standards, and Nominating
  • Appointed - the board has appointed the following committees to carry out a specific charge: Awards, Communications, Education & Training, Equity & Inclusion, Financial Advisory, Emergency, Sustainability, and Program
  • Select - the board appoints the following four select committees for specific purposes: Appeals, Audit, and Bylaws. Terms expire upon completion of the purpose for which they were appointed.

Topic Committees

Emergency

We work to advance preparedness among members by providing related guides and resources and keeping members informed about upcoming events related to emergency response.

Equity and Inclusion

We focus on equity and inclusion issues within the organization and the conservation field. We advise the board and plan programs to advance equity, inclusion, diversity, and accessibility in the field.

Sustainability

We work to promote sustainability within the organization and the conservation field. We create and collect resources and host events to help inform and engage with others around sustainability topics.

Organizational Committees

Awards

We invite and review awards nominations and work with the board to identify potential new award categories.

Education and Training

We plan professional development training and workshop opportunities throughout the year, and advise on gaps in knowledge and skills.

Ethics and Standards

We hear and assess issues of alleged misconduct and clarify proper adherence to the Code of Ethics, Guidelines for Practice, and Commentaries to the Guidelines for members and the public.

Membership

We review applications for professional membership, a process where applicants demonstrate their ability to meet our Essential Competencies for Conservation Professionals.

Nominating

We find qualified candidates for the AIC Board of Directors election each year.

Program

We plan programming for the annual meeting. Our makeup changes each year. The AIC Board Vice President serves as chair. The rest of the committee is made up of the staff program manager and any other officer or volunteer organizing a session.

Communications

We support communications for the organization, assisting with outreach efforts, collaborative platforms, and publication guidelines.

Bylaws and Appeals

We are each called to action when the need arises. The AIC Bylaws were revised in 2023 and will not be amended again until the board identifies a clear need for updates. The Appeals Committee is called to action when a recommendation from the Ethics and Standards Committee needs further action.

Audit and Financial Advisory

We are called to action to review the audit and financial decisions. We are appointed by the board but do not act outside of their remit.

Outreach

We promote outreach to the general public and interested parties about conservation and preservation. Our K-12 Education Outreach subcommittee also works directly with K-12 educators to increase their knowledge and awareness of conservation, while proving educational resources.

Member Engagement

We promote member engagement by creating opportunities for conversations, encouraging members to take on volunteer roles, and working to develop a sense of community among members. Contact the chair with ideas!

Collaborative Workshops in Photograph Conservation Advisory Committee

We are charged with the conception and development of workshops, symposiums, and online training on topics of interest to photograph conservators and allied professionals.
