According to an article by Julia Halperin in the print version of the January 16, 2025 issue of The New York Times , the Des Moines Art Center has been given final approval to take down “Greenwood Pond: Double Site”, a site-specific installation it commissioned from Mary Miss in the late 1980s. While the Center will have to pay Miss $900,000 and spend as much as $350,000 to safely remove the parts of the work, that sum is considerable less than the estimated $2 million- $2.5 million cost to repair the work. “Greenwood Pond” is a safety hazard in its current state and the Center says it has already spent almost $1 million on repairs. It seems that someone should have thought about the cost of long term maintenance of the site when the project was first proposed.
