    Hi Everyone,
I'm looking for any advice/suggestions from the community about conducting a collections move. I plan to box a majority of the smaller items myself but we are planning on hiring movers to help with the larger items. Does anyone have suggestions for what to look for in a company as I evaluate quotes from different businesses?

    Thanks in advance!

    Hi Corrine-

I wanted to pass along the following C2C Care webinar that might be of some help as you plan the move:

C2C Care Webinar Objects on the Move! Packing and Transporting Collections
    https://connectingtocollections.org/community-webinar-objects-on-the-move-packing-and-transporting-collections/

I would also encourage the community to share any lessons learned from doing collections move to this thread. Thanks again.

    Hi Corrine,

I wanted to pass along a webinar that CCAHA recently did called, "All Together Now: Working Art Service Providers."

Best of luck with the move!

    Corinne,

Find out if the movers have worked with other museums before. If so, reach out to those museums for references of the movers. It helps knowing whether or not they're familiar with moving museum collections.

    Hello,
We did a collections move to the Mead building from 2018-2021.
We did a mix of things, due to budget restraints. We did hire a moving company who told us that they had moved museum collections before. But things still ended up broken. I guess the thing to really focus on is slowing down and moving slowly. Reminding your movers that this is not a race.

We even had planning meetings and discussed what would go. How those items would move. The type of equipment they should use, how they should handle certain items. But come the day of, things still tend to go awry.

I'm much better to talk to about this in person, but if you want to chat about my experience as the move coordinator. I'm happy to give any advice that I can. I'll try to be more concise.

During Covid I watched an awesome presentation by the Peabody Essex Museum staff (Salem, MA) about their collection move to offsite storage in 2018. Here's a link I found https://www.pem.org/blog/mission-impossible-the-great-collection-move-of-2018

You might contact the authors for more details. I believe the video my ne available on YouTube.

    Best wishes,
