The Palace of Nestor Excavation Project is offering a total of six internships, (two places each for the winter/spring, summer, and fall field seasons) in Pylos, Greece. This internship comes with a full fellowship that includes travel to and from Pylos, room, board, and a small weekly stipend. Medical insurance is required.

    Dates:   Winter 2026 (Feb. 11-March 28, 2026)

                  Summer 2026 (May 18-July 4, 2026)

                  Fall 2024 (Oct. 5-Nov. 21, 2026)

The Palace of Nestor Excavation is an ongoing archaeological dig sponsored by the Department of Classics, University of Cincinnati that operates in Southwestern Greece. The site dates to the Aegean Late Bronze Age (Mycenaean period) and is located near modern-day Pylos. In 2015 the team uncovered the unlooted grave of a Mycenaean warrior known as the Griffin Warrior (www.griffinwarrior.org). In 2018 the team began the excavation of two monumental beehive tombs (tholos tombs), which is still in progress.

Under the supervision of the lead conservator and the project co-director, Sharon Stocker, interns will carry out general conservation duties including: examination and analysis of excavated materials; thorough documentation of artifacts via treatment reports and object photography; cleaning and reconstruction of artifacts; and storage and packaging of finds. Interns will have the opportunity to work with a variety of materials, including stone, ceramics, glass, metals, and ivory. Interns will also work closely with archaeologists to understand the interaction between field and lab as well as the intersection between conservation and archaeological research questions. If excavation fieldwork is operating during this period, interns will also have the opportunity to participate in on-site conservation, including stabilizing or lifting of artifacts.

Qualifications: The interns should have an interest in archaeological conservation, preferably metals, and be currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a recognized conservation program. Applicants must have object conservation experience and be able to work independently. Good written and verbal communication skills in English are required.

To Apply: Please send pdf file with statement of interest, current curriculum vitae, and letter of reference to Sharon Stocker (sharon.stocker@uc.edu). Applications for the winter session are due by January 1, 2026. Applications for summer and fall seasons are due by January 25, 2026.
