COSTEP MA (https://mblc.state.ma.us/costepma/), the New England Alliance for Response volunteer group, was fortunate to have been selected to host FAIC's "Heritage Responder" trainings, beginning this July. These workshops are online or in-person - you select your preference - and consist of high-quality sessions targeted to multiple levels of staff responsible for cultural collections.
The sessions are suitable for a wide set of stakeholders - essentially all those responsible for cultural institutions and collections in the face of emergencies should find either (or both) sets of trainings useful. Directors, Administrators, Curators, Facilities Managers, Collections Managers, Site Managers, Archivists, Clerks, Librarians, Conservators, and more, are welcome. The trainings also welcome folks across the spectrum of experience in emergency planning and response.
Applicants will have the option to select if they would like to complete the online curriculum only OR the combined in-person and online training.

- Online component: Consists of 10 modules that will be released beginning in July, to be viewed and completed asynchronously, culminating in a group-wide virtual table-top exercise in August wherein attendees will discuss their responses to a hypothetical emergency. This online training is not usually offered widely. At COSTEP MA's request, this is the first time it will be offered widely – a great opportunity! Please share with others in arts and culture organizations.
- In-person training: A two-day session hosted in Boston at the JFK Library & Museum on September 19 & 20, limited to 30 participants. Some travel funds will be available. All training participants will be expected to complete online curriculum modules from July – September 2023. Please indicate this preference at sign up.
The sponsor of the event is the Foundation for Advancement in Conservation (FAIC), funded by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. Multiple COSTEP MA partners have helped develop the program and logistics, led by the JFK Library & Museum, Massachusetts Archives, Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners, Boston Office of Emergency Management, Federal Emergency Management Agency (Heritage Emergency National Task Force), Northeast Document Conservation Center, and with additional and important support from the COSTEP Executive Committee.
A great, free opportunity to elevate your knowledge and skills in emergency preparedness, helping better preserve and share the cultural fabric of the Commonwealth and New England. Register today!
