    Hello Everyone,

    The motor on our Nilfisk GM80 just gave out.  Brand new, the "entire vacuum package" looks like they are up around $2,000 so we are investigating just replacing the motor if possible. 

    I understand this discussion board can't really endorse specific manufacturers or businesses, so I guess what I am looking for is to hear if anyone out there has attempted to purchase and replace just the motor on a Nilfisk GM 80 and had either good or bad results (I would be interested to hear about both good and bad experiences).  The institution I work for does have a licensed electrician on staff if that makes a difference.

          I would also check for an old fashioned vacuum repair service - the kind that is  filled with re-furbished vacuums and vacuum parts, etc. I have found that these folks are always pretty creative about fixing vacuums and have resources that you might not find by taking a vacuum to a Nilfisk dealer who would rather sell you a new vacuum. I have a 30 year old Miele vacuum with variable speeds that I thought would have to be replaced. The local vacuum repair shop took it in and discovered that it really only needed a new switch. The new switch was not easy to find, but by checking their network, after a few weeks they had a new switch and I had a working vacuum again. Miele wanted me to purchase a newer model, rather than taking the time to see what could be repaired or replaced.

    Thankyou to everyone chiming in on this on the thread (and to me directly), I really appreciate it. 

    One of the responses mentioned "electronic/hot metal odor" from their Nilfisk motor.  Noticeable heat produced by the motor is something that I have also experienced in the past while using mine, and it's always made me wonder a little bit.  Another Nilfisk user I was speaking with mentioned her Nilfisk GM80 motor kind of runs hot too- maybe that's normal to a certain degree?...  It does seem like a pretty powerful motor that has to create a lot of suction power through substantial filter material, so maybe noticeable motor heat is inevitable.  I have never really felt other vacuum motors to compare, so maybe it's "typical/normal vacuum motor heat".

    To clarify another question raised directly to me off thread relating to the issue:
    For the past few years, I have had the variable speed dial removed, and just use it full speed "on/off".  When the motor gave out, it was running "full on".
