  • 1.  policy on bottles in museum galleries?

    Posted 05-09-2023 15:31

Hello, this is a little beyond the usual topic for C2C, but y'all are the best resource I know!

I'm wondering what policies other institutions have regarding visitors bringing water into the museum galleries.

Our current policy is to allow visitors to bring only water into the historic house museum, and only if it is in a clear, unbreakable bottle.

The cafés and gift shops used to sell pre-filled clear plastic bottled water, but have stopped as part of an effort to reduce single-use plastics. We've switched to pre-filled metal bottles, however they are quite heavy and not clear.  The concern now is that if a bottle is dropped, it could cause damage to floors or nearby collections. Visitors could re-use the bottles for other liquids that might damage collections if spilled, and staff have no way of knowing the difference without pouring it out. There is also some concern about vandalism.

We don't want to have to stop allowing water, because visitors must climb around four flights of stairs, air conditioning is very limited, and the self-guided tour often takes longer than an hour to complete. There are no restrooms or water fountains available inside the house.

I appreciate your comments and suggestions!

    Hi Genevieve-

Thanks for your question. While this isn't a direct collections care question I would encourage the community to share any general guidelines they have towards water in the galleries. Feel free to share if you are able!

    Hey Genevieve
The policy I've done when i worked in a house museum was the drink had to be in a bottle that closed securely, preferaly with a screw top, and to not drink anything in the rooms themselves. This way, people are still able to hydrate as they need and we protected the rooms and artifacts.

NASM's food/drink policy, as stated on our website, is "Food must be kept in sealed containers and may not be consumed in the museum (other than food purchased in the Mars Café). Personal water bottles may be brought in to the museum, bottle fillers are located alongside most water fountains."

When we did behind-the-scenes open house tours, the official policy was "water in sealable containers."  In practice, so long as the container was kept shut while the person wasn't drinking or filling it, we didn't police what was in it.  Sort of like how one tends to turn a blind eye to some Cheerios slipped to a hangry toddler. We don't have much issue with spills or drops, though maybe every other year someone manages to drop a bottle onto a large object (think airplane) from one of the higher walkways.  Of course, we're not a historic building, and are fortunate to be able to design displays such that artifact vandalism is difficult.

I've found this is pretty typical of other museums I visit, too.  I hope that helps!
