  • 1.  Storage for Film Shoot

    Hi all!

My historic house museum is going to be hosting a large scale film shoot starting next month. They will be using almost the entire house for three months and we have to move a significant amount of furniture out of the way. Since they are using most of the rooms, we are faced with the dilemma of where to put the furniture. It was suggested that we use PODS, the portable storage container company. The fine art movers we are hiring have used them before and said that if the objects are elevated on pallets and the roof is kept clean of snow, that the items inside would likely be fine. We would be keeping sensitive items like paintings and lacquered cabinets in our storage area, but there is not enough room for all of the objects we need to move. I also have Conserv environmental monitors I can place in the PODS that will alert me if the humidity or dew point get too high, and we plan on placing dry buckets like these in the PODS as well.

Our museum is on Long Island, NY and the furniture would be stored from January to March 2025. We are looking at three 16" units, and I am trying to get more information of climate-controlled units as well.

When I brought this to leadership, they asked if could investigate if this is proper museum storage. While of course it is far from ideal, I am interested to hear if other collections professionals feel this is a viable short term solution? Thanks in advance for any insight!

    Hi Emily,

I am the C2CC monitor for this week and an objects conservator. My first question is: what types of objects will go into the storage units? You mention lacquered cabinets and paintings will not, but it would be helpful to understand what materials would go in it so I can help advise accordingly.

    Thanks!

    Rebecca
