The Palace of Nestor Excavation
Location: Pylos, Greece
Dates: Winter-Spring 2023 (Feb. 2-March 26); Summer 2023 (May 14-July 9)
The Palace of Nestor Excavation Project is offering four unpaid 7-8-week internships (2 in the winter-spring, 2 in the summer) at the Palace of Nestor Excavations in Pylos, Greece. This internship is offered with a full fellowship that includes travel to and from Pylos, room, and board. Medical insurance is required.
The Palace of Nestor Excavation is an ongoing archaeological dig sponsored by the Department of Classics, University of Cincinnati that operates in Southwestern Greece. The Palace of Nestor is a Late Bronze Age (Mycenaean) site located near modern-day Pylos. In 2015 the team uncovered the unlooted grave of a Mycenaean warrior known as the Griffin Warrior (www.griffinwarrior.org). In 2018 the team began the excavation of two monumental beehive tombs (tholos tombs), which is still in progress.
Under the supervision of the lead conservator and the project co-director, Sharon Stocker, interns will carry out general conservation duties including: examination and analysis of excavated materials; documentation through treatment reports and object photography; cleaning and reconstruction of artifacts; and storage and packaging of finds. Interns will have the opportunity to work with a variety of materials, including stone, ceramics, glass, metals, and ivory. Interns will also work closely with archaeologists to understand the interaction between conservation and archaeological research questions. If excavation fieldwork is operating during this period, interns will also have the opportunity to participate in on-site conservation, including stabilizing or lifting of artifacts.
Qualifications: The interns should have an interest in archaeological conservation, preferably metals, and be currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a recognized conservation program. Applicants should have object conservation experience and should be able to work independently. Good written and verbal communication skills in English are required.
To Apply: Please send pdf file with statement of interest, current curriculum vitae, and letter of reference to Sharon Stocker (
sharon.stocker@uc.edu). Applications are due by November 23, 2022.
