    Dear colleagues:

I am writing this for someone who would like used or old HOBO-type data loggers. He does not need bluetooth, wifi or fancy ones with bells and whistles.  He does need the battery to last at least 6 months, since he cannot get access to site that often.  Does anyone know who manages the second-hand market of these? I realize they have to be recalibrated.
Thanks in advance for any information,
    Martha

    Dear Martha,

At Conserv we have begun the Small Collections Monitoring Program to make dataloggers that have been traded-in by our clients available to smaller collecting institutions who otherwise would not have the funds to purchase dataloggers. This program is being rolled out slowly as we have trade-ins and we are seeking to work with regional partners to manage the distribution of loggers. We will make sure the traded in dataloggers are functioning, have new batteries and have gone through a minimal calibration. We would like trade-in recipients to use our free software and will provide on-boarding to help recipients get started with monitoring. Please contact me directly and we can help your fellow.

    All best,

    Susan

    Hi Martha,

I've checked in with a few of our preservation specialists for the C2C community and unfortunately don't have a good recommendation for a second-hand market. I did get the following suggestions:

    - Some institutions will donate units they no longer need to other institutions, so possibly putting a call out on the distlist asking for units might get you a unit that might work.
    - Onset might have older inventory or may have a unit that would meet you contact's needs, it might be worth contacting them directly: https://www.onsetcomp.com/ lists a few phone numbers at the bottom of the page that might be worth contacting, or you might be able to find a dealer closer to you.
    - Others recommended getting a newer unit, even though they may have more bells and whistles than your contact is looking for, it will last a longer time and may be worth the money upfront since the older units would need to be calibrated anyway. Looking through other distlist postings, people have been having a lot of success with companies like Conserv, or using Eclimate Notebook and buying new HOBOs or using Hanwell units (although there are issues with getting Hanwell from England.)

I'm sorry we weren't able to get you a better, easier answer, but hopefully one of the three solutions above will be something that works for you!
    All the best,
    Liz

Apologies if you already are aware of this--recalibrating an older Onset unit can be problematic, as they don't actually recalibrate HOBOs, they replace the sensor. Prior to purchasing any used HOBOs, your contact should reach out to Onset and make sure that it's still possible to "calibrate" them. (If the particular sensor used in a particular HOBO is no longer being manufactured, it's no longer possible to "calibrate" the HOBO.) Good luck with the search.
