Join the National Heritage Responders (NHR)

How can I become a responder?

  • Complete one of FAIC's trainings or the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and Smithsonian Cultural Rescue Initiative (SCRI) Heritage Emergency and Response Training (HEART)
  • Pass an exam which covers material taught during training.
In addition to the core requirements, we consider geographic location and specialty when onboarding new responders.

Our Upcoming Trainings

2024: We will host trainings in Charleston, South Carolina, and New Orleans, Louisiana in 2024. The Charleston training will take place Thursday, April 11 and Friday, April 12, 2024, in conjunction with the Lowcountry Alliance for Response network. The New Orleans training will take place in October 2024 - exact dates TBD - in conjunction with the New Orleans Preservation Coalition. Please email emergencies@culturalheritage.org for more information on our regional trainings.

Cyclical Onboarding

  • Already complete a training? Access the exam by emailing emergencies@culturalheritage.org.
  • We will place those who pass the exam in a pool of eligible members.
  • Each May, we identify any gaps (geographic, expertise, etc...) on the team and onboard eligible members who will contribute to the team's diversity.
