Photographic Materials Group

Join Our Group!

We connect people for an exchange of ideas and information about photographic conservation, promote the development of sound conservation practices, encourage the publication of scholarly articles on photographic conservation and related topics, develop closer ties with other related disciplines, and disseminate responsible information on the care of photographs. Areas of interest mirror the diversity of materials found in photographic media: plastic film, glass, metal, and composite objects including wood, paper prints, and album/book structures.

Formed in 1979 as the first specialty group of the organization, we now have over 500 members.

Our membership is open to any AIC member with an interest in photographic materials conservation.

What We Do

Annual Meeting Programming

We coordinate photographic materials programming for AIC's Annual Meeting. Programming sometimes corresponds with overall meeting theme, sometimes concentrates on a special theme and frequently includes collaborative efforts with other specialty groups. Topics covered include collections management, treatments, updates on research, disaster recovery, research and analysis, case studies, techniques, and other issues. The program is usually a full day or more of paper presentations, panel discussions, tips sessions, workshops, as well as a business meeting and social events.

Winter Meeting Programming

We also sponsor a biennial, two-day winter meeting that usually includes a one day pre- or post-conference session featuring workshops or lectures.

  • In those years when we hold the meeting, we abbreviate the photographic materials session at AIC's Annual Meeting.
  • In the years when there is no meeting, we typically have several full days of presentations at AIC's Annual Meeting.

Publications & Resources

We encourage the publication of books, periodical resources, articles and other useful tools like sample sets. Our Publications Committee coordinates these efforts.

Postprints

We publish our postprints, Topics in Photographic Preservation , biennially. It is a compilation of papers presented at photographic materials sessions at AIC annual meetings, our biennial winter meetings, and sometimes other submissions related to photographic materials. While scientists, conservators, and historians in the field contribute published research and treatments, we do not subject any of the included papers to a peer review process. Submission Deadline: September 31 on odd years

Photograph Information Record

The Photographic Information Record (PIR) is an artist questionnaire to be filled out by the artist or gallery and that gathers technical information about the creation of a work of art along with information about the display and conservation history. It was developed by the Photographic Materials Research Group, international colleagues, and with input from curators and collections managers. The form is translated into several languages for use internationally.

Wiki

Our wiki  is an interactive and collaborative resource for conservators and conservation students to learn and share about topics in photograph conservation. It is a dynamic endeavor that aims to foster communication and connectivity through an active exchange of information on developing research and the current trends and needs of the field.

Photographic Print Sample Sets

Photographic Print Sample Sets are useful as research tools or for educational purposes. Four different sets of prints have been produced.

Journal

The Journal of the American Institute for Conservation dedicated Vol. 59, Nos. 3-4 to salted paper prints, a must have for all photograph conservators.
