The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco (FAMSF) is offering a full-time, three-year position for an Assistant Conservator in the Objects Conservation Lab for the period of December 1, 2018 through November 30, 2021. FAMSF comprises two museums: the de Young and the Legion of Honor. FAMSF's collection is comprised of more than 130,000 objects, collected and curated in nine departments. Art of Africa, Oceania and the Americas; American Art; Contemporary Art and Programming; and Costume and Textile Arts are housed at the de Young. The Achenbach Collection of Graphic Art; Ancient Art; European Paintings; and European Decorative Arts are housed at the Legion of Honor.
The Mellon Assistant Objects Conservator will have an integral role in all aspects of Objects Lab responsibilities and duties. The Assistant Objects Conservator will work under the supervision of the Head of Objects Conservation and collaboratively with curators and other conservators. The selected candidate will gain experience in all aspects of conservation encountered in a large museum setting including activities related to exhibition, installation, loans, preventive care including environmentally safe storage and IPM, treatment documentation, research, public programs, and publication.
This is a salaried position with a full benefits package. Some additional funds are available for travel and research.
Candidates should be graduates of an accredited conservation training program and have demonstrated experience in the treatment of objects of a range of media. Computer and digital photo documentation skills are required. Applications will be considered on a rolling basis until the post is filled.
