Communications Committee

About Us

We promote professionalism in the publication of AIC's online and printed materials. We also support opportunities to engage allied professionals and diverse public audiences with the organization and the field of conservation. We do this in consultation with the AIC Board Director for Communications and the Communications Director on staff as well as all Specialty Groups and Networks.

The Communications Committee replaced the Publications Committee as of February 1, 2020.

What We Do

  • Maintain standards, provides guidelines, and assists as necessary with all our publications, including: the Journal of the American Institute for Conservation, AIC News, annual meeting abstracts and postprints, and specialty group publications, the wiki, and our website, and others. 
  • Develop “Best Practices” guidelines for publications and submission of abstracts for our publications to AATA
  • Facilitate development of Specialty Group and Network web content as incorporated into or supplementing the our website. 
  • Assess advances in publication technology to enhance the quality and availability of our publications and online resources. 
  • Monitor and improve content, alliances, and strategic activities that facilitate outreach.

Members

Katherine Kelly

Chair (2025-2027)

Katherine Kelly is a book conservator at the Library of Congress in Washington, DC. Previously, she has worked at the Smithsonian Institution Libraries, the National Archives, Iowa State University, Harvard University, and Cornell University. She received her MS in Information Studies and Certificate of Advanced Study in Conservation of Library and Archival Materials from the University of Texas at Austin in 2007.

Lisa Goldberg

Newsletter Editor

Lisa Goldberg is a private conservator with a focus on preventive care as well as health and safety issues. She is a member of SPNHC and AAM, and is a Fellow of AIC. As long time editor of the AIC News, she regularly works with  authors and various committees to help bring publication projects to fruition.

Rachael Arenstein

Wiki Working Group Chair

Rachael Perkins Arenstein is a Professional Member of the American Institute for Conservation and a principal of A.M. Art Conservation, LLC, the private practice that she co-founded in 2009.  She has worked at the Bible Lands Museum Jerusalem, the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian, the Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology, the American Museum of Natural History and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.  She completed internships at the British Museum and the Israel Museum as well as other international institutions.  Rachael's degree in art conservation is from the University of London where she studied at the Institute of Archaeology, UCL.  She received her B.A. in Near Eastern Studies and Archaeology from Cornell University where she wrote her honors thesis on Dendrochronology, excavated at Tel Miqne-Ekron in Israel and has been the on-site conservator for Tel Gezer excavations. She is also active in several professional organizations including positions as the e-Editor for the AIC, AIC's Collection Care Network, and Co-Chair of the MuseumPests Working Group. Rachael has been a Collections Assessment for Preservation (CAP) assessor since 2007. She has a strong interest in preventive care including environmental monitoring and control, integrated pest management, and collection management. Her treatment interests include antiquities and archaeological artifacts, ethnographic and indigenous collections, metals, natural science specimens, taxidermy and dioramas.

Megan Narvey

Outreach Subcommittee Chair

Megan Brakob Narvey is a graduate of Carleton College (BA in chemistry) and University College London (MA in Principles of Conservation; MSc in Conservation for Archeology and Museums). She worked as the postgraduate intern in Objects at the Canadian Conservation Institute, and then as an Objects Conservator at the Western Archeological and Conservation Center in Tucson, Arizona. Megan is currently the Outreach Conservator at the Minnesota Historical Society, where she helps individuals and small organizations across the state learn about conservation and take care of their collections.

Ellen Chase

Education K-12 Outreach Subcommittee Chair

Ellen Chase has been Objects Conservator in the Department of Conservation and Scientific Research at the Freer|Sackler, the Smithsonian Institution’s Museums of Asian Art since 1999. Prior to that she was a contractor or fellow at a number of museums including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and the British Museum. Ellen is a graduate of the Conservation Center of the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University, where she received her master’s degree in 1993. 

Rebecca Rushfield

Publications Subcommittee Chair

Rebecca Anne Rushfield, a New York City-based consultant in conservation and Associate Director of the FAIC Oral History Project , earned a Master’s degree in Art History at the Institute of Fine Arts of New York University and a diploma in conservation at the NYU Conservation Center . She has worked on projects for many institutions, has been a member of several committees of the American Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works, and has been Assistant Coordinator and Coordinator of a number of Working Groups of the International Council of Museums Committee on Conservation. Her special interests include the history of conservation, the transfer of conservation knowledge by both formal and informal means, and the public perception of conservation and conservators.

Sarah Reidell

Board Liaison

Sarah Reidell is the Margy E. Meyerson Head of Conservation at the University of Pennsylvania Libraries. 
 
A Fellow of AIC with a focus on libraries, preventive conservation, and special collections, she is serving a second term as the AIC Board Director for Communications (2025-2028). Sarah has held other volunteer and elected positions within AIC and BPG. 
 
Sarah received a Masters in Library and Information Science with a Certificate of Advanced Study in Conservation and Preservation from the University of Texas in 2002. Prior to her current position at the University of Pennsylvania Libraries, she held appointments as Rare Book and Paper Conservator at The New York Public Library and Special Collections Conservator at the Harvard University Library.

Bonnie Naugle

Staff Liaison

Bonnie Naugle joined AIC in 2012. As Communications & Membership Director, she manages AIC’s print and online publications. She oversees the membership team and manages member communications. She also manages AIC’s website and FAIC's web resources, and coordinates the blog and wiki. Bonnie holds a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism and a Master of Public Administration degree.
