  • 1.  Advertisements on the AIC Wiki

    Hi all,

Today I noticed placeholders for banner advertisements (basically ads seeking advertisers) when I visited the wiki. From what I could tell, it looks like the landing page for the wiki has a vertical banner ad on the side of the page and a horizontal banner at the bottom. I think all the other pages have only the bottom banner.

I know that banner ads were introduced on the AIC website after the rebranding, but this is the first I've seen on the wiki. Does anyone have more information about this that they can share? I'm sure that the possible impacts of advertisements on our readership were considered--this continues to be a vigorously debated subject among Wikipedia editors and users--and I would be interested to hear more about what went into this decision.

    Thank you,

    Hi everyone,
We are introducing banner ads on the AIC Wiki and CoOL to support the costs of technical help and hosting. We didn't have additional space in our budget for the monthly service that is necessary to keep updating the wiki, so we are planning to use advertising (the same system we use for our primary website advertising) to supplement these costs.

The AIC Wiki is supported (paid for) by AIC, not the foundation, so asking for donations is harder on an organizational level - we don't have a system within our foundation to support online platforms. CoOL for example is supported by donations, but mostly is paid for with operating funds, which are very hard to get in a foundation. Associations can't ask for donations. It's tricky. FAIC has received grant funding for projects to enhance the wiki, but ongoing costs are never funded.

I'm hoping that as we have more time and experience with our new wiki techs, we can offer some Zoom-based learning and training events to all the wiki editors.

    Thanks,
    Bonnie
