  • 1.  Labeling magazines

    I am looking for resources and advice for adding accession numbers to magazines.  We use pencil for paper objects that do not contain glossy coating but are stumped by magazines and web searches are not yielding many results.  Thanks in advance!

    Hi Stephanie, 

    I've heard back from one of our experts, I've included their response below:

    Two thoughts:

    • Use a marker recommended for coated photographs, writing small in a discreet location. Test to check for potential problems with the ink bleeding through.
    • If the magazines are stored in sleeves or bags, mark the bag rather than the magazine. Add the date and/or vol. number so the magazine can be easily returned to the correct container.

    Hopefully last update! We had another answer coming in from an expert recommending acid-free flags with the accession number written in pencil. These would be the same kinds of flags you would use for rare books that can't be directly labelled as well.
