We have an artwork in consideration for acquisition, where a large portion of the materials used in the work are silicone caulk. Specifically, the work is a plaster form, covered in a layer of silicone caulk, in which small pieces of plastic are embedded.
I tried to do some research, but most of the research I could find about silicone caulk in the context of art conservation was with regards to its use in treatments. Are there any special considerations that we should keep in mind if the artwork itself is the silicone caulk? Does its proximity to plaster change anything for the silicone or the plaster?
