Connecting to Collections Care

Hello,

I am a Preventative Conservator currently working on a project to design a mount and relocate an extremely heavy granite memorial stone which is stacked in two pieces. Unfortunately past exhibition decisions have resulted in this extremely heavy monument being displayed without a mount and it is sitting flush against the floor. We have a second monument exhibiting the very damage I am hoping to avoid with this new move - crowbar damage to the bottom edge.

If anyone has any recommendations as to methodologies or equipment we could apply/invest in, I would be very grateful.

The techniques to move your granite objects depend greatly on the particular details of your pieces. I'd suggest inquiring with riggers. Contact as many as you need until you find someone who you are confident can safely move your objects with minimum risk to them. The Specialized Carriers and Rigging Association <www.scranet.org> is an international trade association of more than 1,400 members from 46 nations.
