  • 1.  New Wiki Entry - Frames Glossary

    Posted 06-07-2023 22:09

    Dear colleagues,

The Paintings Specialty Group Wiki Committee would like to draw your attention to an exciting new entry! If you attended the PSG Business Meeting last week or watched the recording, you already got a peek at the new Frames Glossary, which was submitted by Chris Swan with additional help from several interns over the years (see more from Chris below). It may be accessed through the provided link or from the Home Page of the Paintings Wiki (Section 10. Frames). Please join me in thanking Chris and all who assisted in making this contribution happen! As Chris notes below, though there are over 150 entries currently, the current scope is somewhat narrow. We hope that anyone with additional examples of frame types, molding styles, finishing techniques, or other terminology will submit them (with an image and source citation) to aic.psg.wiki@gmail.com.

    _______________
More from Chris: "The Glossary is an alphabetical listing of profile types, ornament, and stylistic titles, since many users may not readily distinguish between any of these categories of classification. It is not comprehensive and hopefully will provide a template to be augmented and improved upon with time. As a frame conservator who has treated and built many frames, my experience and motivation is driven largely by my long-standing affiliation with an American Decorative Arts Museum, established in the British artistic tradition, namely the Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. I realize there are many more refinements and influences that are not included here, and I hope this listing inspires other scholars to improve on my initial offering. Lastly, I am indebted to several former interns and conservators who have helped this project over some years time. Astrid Smith, Sydney Beall Nikolaus, Claire Martin and Elizabeth Robson were indispensable in collecting terms and images, formatting and editing drafts over a several years period. Elizabeth has inspired me to submit the glossary for publication. Thank you."

Nice work! The layout is a good model for other glossaries in the wiki- the way it has illustrations within the table.

I shared the link with a friend who works in framing. I figure it will be of interest across industries.
