  • 1.  Silver & China Storage?

    Posted 8 days ago

We are looking for product recommendations to store items in an historic house museum.

We are planning on purchasing new anti-tarnish cloth to line drawers and cabinets for silver storage. Someone recommended we purchase camphor blocks instead.

We also want to purchase some storage containers for fine antique bone china.

We appreciate any guidance you can provide.

    Thank you,

    Hi Ansley,

My name is Maddie Cooper, and I am a preventive conservator and the discussion board monitor for the next few weeks.

On the topic of camphor- it's not typically used in modern museum settings. Camphor blocks release Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) which can be an irritant and can also potentially interact with collections stored nearby. Instead, we recommend using corrosion intercept bags or films or corrosion inhibitor cloths. There is a recent C2CC Webinar on the topic of silver care that will have some great information and resources for you on the topic.

On the topic of ceramics storage, things are relatively straightforward! I will like a great resource from the Preservation Self Assessment Program here that has some really good tips.

    Hope this helps!

    Maddie
