Elmer Eusman received his diploma in book and paper conservation in 1989 from the Dutch National School for Conservation, a four-year program now incorporated in the University of Amsterdam. He continued his studies in the Corrigan-Greca private conservation studio in Paris, the Amsterdam Rijksmuseum, and the British Museum in London. He completed a three-year post-graduate fellowship at the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC and worked as a conservator at the Baltimore Museum of Art, the Boymans Museum in Rotterdam, and the Library of Congress. For almost ten years, he served as the Special Assistant to the Director for Preservation in the Library before he became the Library's Chief Conservator in 2013. He has presented and published research on a number of topics including wet-dry boundaries on paper, mechanical paper-strengthening, Dutch print publisher Ploos van Amstel, iron gall ink corrosion and the migration of iron ions, and incorporating project management strategies for multi-year conservation projects. His experience within AIC includes serving as the Chair and Program Chair of Book and Paper Specialty Group and serving on various AIC and BPG committees. He currently serves as the AIC and FAIC Treasurer.
