Gianluca Pastorelli joined the scientific staff at the National Gallery of Denmark – Centre for Art Technological Studies and Conservation (CATS) in 2018. His analytical focus is on artists’ materials and techniques, as well as on the deterioration of materials._x000d_

As a Conservation Scientist, he interacts with the conservation and curatorial departments, centering his research on non-invasive characterization of works of art such as paintings, drawings and sculptures._x000d_

Gianluca received a PhD in Conservation Science from the University of Bologna, Italy, after completing a project on the degradation of archaeological Baltic amber at the School of Conservation and the National Museum of Denmark in Copenhagen. Before being appointed at CATS, he held a research assistant position at the Institute for Sustainable Heritage of the University College London, where he focused his research on the characterization of polymer materials, and worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the Center for Scientific Studies in the Arts in Chicago, where he gained experience in investigating materials related to artefacts.
