What is Professional Membership?

Professional Membership is a sign of demonstrated competence.

Our Professional Members are a distinguished group of conservation and preservation professionals who have successfully completed our peer-reviewed application process. It is an important credential that signals a high level of commitment to ethical practice, engagement with current research and active participation in the field.

We have over 1,000 Professional Members all over the country who specialize in various materials and techniques. We list only them in our free, public Find a Professional directory.

How are Professional Members Different?

Anyone can be a member of our organization. Professional Membership requires three additional commitments:

  1. Application process: Professional Members submit an application that assesses their education, experience, independent thinking skills, and a comprehensive understanding of professional standards set by the organization.

  2. Professional Development: Professional Members report a minimum of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) credits that demonstrates how they have developed their skills, conducted outreach, and made contributions to the field in the last five years.

  3. Accountability: Professional Members agree to practice within the Code of Ethics and Guidelines for Practice and maintain a minimum number of continuing professional development credits to maintain their designation. We will remove the designation from members who fail to either meet the minimum required professional development or who, after adjudication, we find do not uphold our Code of Ethics and Guidelines for Practice. For more information on the process for reporting ethics violations, see Process for Reporting Unethical Conduct .

The Application Process

Obtaining Professional Membership requires a significant time investment in addition to the standard training required to enter the profession, but it is a rewarding process that offers applicants professional recognition by the field at-large and in turn a higher standing when approaching new clients, peers in associated fields, and members of the public.

The process requires applicants to demonstrate strong independent critical thinking skills, knowledge of the methodologies commonly used in each conservation specialty, and a steadfast commitment to our Code of Ethics and Guidelines for Practice.
