Advocating for conservation is a year-round activity!
You may be in regular contact with your elected representatives and local government about a wide variety of interests and concerns. We collected resources, talking points, and action items to help build conservation and preservation into your advocacy. Here are a few current topics as well as some upcoming opportunities:
Federal Government Shutdown
The government shutdown directly impacts many people in the cultural heritage field, causing financial strain and uncertainty individually as well as restricting access to key services in the community. Our thoughts are with our furloughed colleagues and those whose employment is uncertain in the face of this shutdown. We’ve collected a few resources to help you discuss the impact of the shutdown on the cultural field:
Ask a Conservator Day is November 4
Ask a Conservator Day can be a great tool to keep your representatives in the loop about your work. Things you may already be planning can give you new pathways to demonstrate the importance of the field. Learn how you can participate, and find resources about engaging your representatives here:
Local and State Elections
We encourage you to stay aware of elections that might be happening in your district or state. Consider building a checklist to see where your candidates stand on funding for the arts and preservation, STEAM education, and support for federal agencies like NEA, NEH, and IMLS, for example. Here are some links to get you started:
Advocacy Training Opportunities
Our colleagues at the National Humanities Alliance are running a Virtual Advocacy Training on Thursday, November 13th at 3 pm ET. The training “reviews the appropriations process, gives a funding overview of humanities policy priorities, and examines key ways you can have the biggest advocacy impact without ever leaving home.”
You can always find advocacy information, including allied organizations’ advocacy resources on our site. Please reach out to us with suggested resources, questions, and feedback at advocacy@culturalheritage.org.
