    The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation seeks applicants for a Marshall Steel Archaeological Materials Fellow Conservator. This term position will support Colonial Williamsburg's ongoing archaeological projects including the Custis Square and Powder Magazine. The fellow will also participate in efforts around the archaeology exhibition to be installed in mid-2023. This position is benefits-eligible. 

    The Fellow is responsible for enhancing the protection and preservation of The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation's cultural assets by performing examination, treatment, and documentation of excavated materials including copper, iron, and lead alloys, wet and dry organics, and glass and ceramics. The conservator will have opportunity to collaborate with curators, architectural researchers, conservators in other specialties, preventive conservation specialists, archaeologists, historic tradespeople, historic interpreters, and other colleagues. The department would support the Fellow in sharing productive research at professional conferences or via publications.  

    Qualified applicants will be prepared to demonstrate their experience working with archaeological materials, as well as documentation and research skills. The Fellow will have scientific knowledge sufficient to undertake in-depth examination and analysis of objects. A master's degree from a recognized conservation program or significant apprenticeship/technical training is required. Candidates will be legally able to work in the US.  All applicants must be able to stand or sit for long periods and be medically and physically capable of wearing a respirator equipped with particulate cartridges. All employees of Colonial Williamsburg are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. 

    Additional skills: Highly developed dexterity to handle collections, use tools, and perform conservation treatments. Ability to make best use of time and resources: using facilities, materials, and equipment effectively and with reasonable and appropriate care. Ability to communicate effectively and follow instructions orally and in writing. Ability to share workplace respectfully with others. 

    Preferred qualifications: Experience with air abrasion for iron alloys; experience with building custom housing for handling and transportation of objects.
