The Institute for Aegean Prehistory Study Center for East Crete (INSTAP SCEC) invites applicants for a summer internship in archaeological conservation.
INSTAP SCEC was established as a non-profit organization (501K) in the United States. It supports the research and publication of Cretan archaeological material by Greek and international archaeologists. The Study Center offers interns a chance to meet students and experts in a variety of fields from many different universities. It has an excellent library and is a good base for exploring the archaeology of Crete.
The conservation team works on recently excavated archaeological material in a well-equipped modern conservation laboratory. Interns participate fully in the work of the lab including examination and analysis of artifacts, cleaning and reconstruction, and full documentation and photography, as well as discussion with materials specialists. In 2025 there will be limited opportunities to spend time on-site as part of an archaeological team since most excavations will conduct study seasons rather than archaeological fieldwork. The intern will work on a variety of archaeological materials, but there will be a wider variety of ceramic vessels for conservation than other material types. In 2025 it will also be possible to work with Roman glass vessels.
The position is not paid, but thanks to a generous donor there is a grant of $3,000 which is intended to cover part of the cost of housing as well as travel to-and-from Crete.
Applicants must be currently enrolled in, or recently graduated from, a graduate-level or equivalent conservation program. Ideal candidates will be proficient in written and spoken English. Preference will be given to interns with experience in archaeology.
Internships may vary in length from 6 to 8 weeks and will be undertaken between May 5th and August 1st. Applicants must indicate their preferred time frame in the application. Successful candidates are required to obtain their own medical insurance for the duration of the internship. They are also required to submit a written report at the close of the internship.
To apply: Please send a curriculum vitae, a letter of reference and a cover letter to Elizabeth Shank (elizabethshank@hotmail.com). Applications are due by January 31, 2025.
