This is a really good question. Working on the photography software creation side of this question, one of the tools that we found was needed was a customized size, rotation, and placement of the area that extracted the pixels from a color checker. When we first started creating the software with the goal of "just make it work and have it work well" there was the assumption that color checkers would be placed in specific position. However as testing and use has evolved, depending on how the capture scene is organized, color checkers might be upside down, titlted, or other more unusual positions. Now we are adapting the software to accomodate any position the target is in.
