  • 1.  Plastic Banner Shattering

    Posted 12-09-2025 16:22

Hello! We have a thin plastic banner that is historically significant for our collection. Unfortunately, someone made a poor storage choice at some point and it is now bunched up and shattering. I have attached a photo for reference. I have been tasked with finding out who I could reach out to about assessing such an item to see if it can be conserved. I am a bit stumped as to whether or not to reach out to textile conservators or someone who is more experienced with plastics instead. Does anyone have experience with this sort of object/material?

White plastic banner crumpled into brown cardboard box, is shattering.

    Hi Alyssa,

Thanks for reaching out to C2C Care! I think for something like this banner someone with more plastics knowledge might be better prepared to help with assessment. On the AIC Find a conservator page you can search by material and by specialty - when I selected plastics/synthetics/rubber from materials and flags/banners from Textiles, it popped up 5 people in the US that have both listed. The link to find a conservator is here: Find A Professional

    All the best,

    Liz
