Conservators at the National Gallery of Art have been practicing preventive conservation for decades, but the Preventive Conservation Department was only formally established in 2014. Over the last ten years, the department has developed procedures and protocols focused on preserving the Gallery's collection. This work is built around a spirit of collaboration between conservators and other stakeholders in the institution. The ways in which preventive conservators navigate their role in a large museum will be discussed.

Jamie Gleason is a Senior Preventive Conservator at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC.
