  • 1.  What is this tape...

    Posted 05-29-2024 15:19

Does anyone know what  "tricolor 'diplomatic tableware' tape" is? I'm packing some artifacts for transport to a consulate, and their directs say I must mark the boxes with this, but I can't figure out what it is exactly.

    Thank you!

    Dear Mrs. Seymour,

I didn't find anything related to 'tricolor diplomatic tableware tape' in the conservation and art handling field.

I found some information about a topology of sealing tape that presents the colours or the flag of one nation. From some reviews are very positive about the resistance and adhesive's abilities, but are not related to a professional or scientific testing system.

I hope that these informations will be helpful.

    Best regards

    Good morning:

The tape being referred to may be tamper security tape, such as this version found on Amazon:

    Hi Bonnie,

They may also be referring to a ribbon used to tie napkins as part of table settings at official dinners. "Tricolor" makes me think this could be a French consulate, in which case they may have translated "ruban" as "tape" rather than "ribbon'.  Why they would want this on the boxes I don't know, but perhaps this is another case of "lost in translation" ;-)  Or I could be completely off base. I think it's worth talking to them directly to find out what they mean.

    All my best,

    Fiona

I think there is a tricolor china pattern for crockery known as Diplomat.
