Lisa Kronthal Elkin is the Chief Registrar and Director of Conservation at the American Museum of Natural History in New York. Lisa received her MA in art conservation from the State University College at Buffalo and since 1994 has been working as a conservator at the AMNH; first as assistant and associate conservator in the Anthropology Department and then, since 2001 as Director of Conservation for the natural science collections. Over the years, her focus has been on planning strategically for the preservation of scientific collections. This involves surveying and evaluating risks to collections, planning for collections upgrades, and setting procedures and policies for collections and conservation management. In 2011, management of the Office of the Registrar was added to her roster in an effort to ensure closer communication/collaboration between the registrars and conservators, to better enforce collection policy and to provide support to the museum’s ambitious traveling exhibitions program.
