Katherine, Be wary of blue tape. If it is left up too long even it will affect your surface. I am overly cautious and don't like anything sticky on our historic surfaces. Years ago I worked with a woman in Kentucky who could repair lamp shades. She was able to take the original frame and replace the silk covering with material that matched the original shredded silk.
