Biography

Gianfranco Pocobene specializes in the treatment of easel paintings and murals and is the Principal of Gianfranco Pocobene Studio, a private conservation practice based in Malden, MA. He was the John L. and Susan k. Gardner Chief Conservator (2004-2019) and Chief Paintings and Research Conservator (2019-2023) at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. Gianfranco received his Master of Arts in Conservation from Queen’s University and also holds a Certificate of Advanced Training in Paintings Conservation from the Harvard Art Museums. His forty years of experience working in the U.S. and Canada includes fifteen years at the Straus Center for Conservation, Harvard Art Museums. While there, he oversaw the restoration of significant mural cycles at the Boston Public Library by Pierre Puvis de Chavannes, Edwin Austin Abbey and John Singer Sargent. From 2004-05 his private practice undertook the restoration of the John La Farge murals in the central tower of Trinity Church, Boston.
