  • Thank You and Follow-Up: AIC Member Listening Session on Voting Rights

    Dear Members:

Thank you to everyone who joined our AIC Member Listening Session on Voting Rights and the Code of Ethics last Wednesday, Sep. 30.

As this listening session was not recorded, and as promised, I share a brief recap. On behalf of Cory and the AIC Board, thank you to everyone who participated and shared their perspectives. We appreciated the thoughtful conversation and, most importantly, the opportunity for all of us to listen.

Among the topics and perspectives raised during the session:

    • Different views about vote on the Code of Ethics, including perspectives both for and against expanding voting eligibility
    • Perspectives about communication surrounding the recent vote, including the Board's role, and the importance of being clear in communications.
    • Questions about how members who are not eligible to vote can meaningfully participate in and influence the Code of Ethics revision process.
    • Discussion of Professional Membership more broadly, including its relationship to voting, participation in AIC, along with the experiences of students, emerging professionals, volunteers and practitioners who are not Professional Members.

We were to follow up on a question raised during the session about AIC volunteers and professional membership:

Of the roughly 300 AIC members who are currently F/AIC volunteers and eligible for professional membership, 50% have the credential. Compared to the overall number of members who are eligible for professional membership but do not yet have the credential, which is 57%.

Thank you again for joining us last week and for sharing your perspectives. We are grateful for the care you brought to the conversation.

Please look for the October issue of AIC News, where we'll share more in depth about the history of AIC's Code of Ethics and what comes next.

Cory and I are always available if you would like to continue the conversation with us or share something you did not have an opportunity to raise during the session. If there is sufficient interest, we would also be glad to consider holding another listening session.

  • One-Week Reminder: AIC Members Listening Session Wednesday, September 30

    Dear Members:

A reminder that our AIC Members Listening Session is one week from today:

    AIC Members Listening Session

    Wednesday, September 30
    1:00–2:00 p.m. ET

This virtual session is open to all AIC members and is an opportunity for the AIC Board to listen and hear directly from you specifically about the results of the recent vote on voting rights.

Your thoughts, questions, concerns, and perspectives on the outcome and what it means for our community are important to us. We know members bring different perspectives to this conversation. We do not all have to agree, but we believe it is important that we listen to and learn from one another for the good of our organization. All voices have value!

Please RSVP today and join us. Your voice is important, and we want to hear from you.

What’s Next with the Code of Ethics

Separately, work on the AIC Code of Ethics and Guidelines for Practice continues.

As you know, this has been a thoughtful, multi-year process. The Ethics Core Documents Review Task Force was established by the board in 2022 following an open call for participation and has worked in collaboration with many AIC members. Six additional working groups were formed in 2023, and member input has continued through AIC committees, networks and specialty groups; listening sessions; an online feedback process; and discussion at the 2025 AIC Annual Meeting.

We will be sharing more with all members soon, including:

    • Background on the history of the AIC Code of Ethics and the review process
    • The final proposed revisions and rationale for change
    • A side-by-side comparison of the current Code and proposed revisions
    • Opportunities to learn more about and discuss the proposed changes
    • Information about the timeline and next steps for the future vote

This has been an important, lengthy process. We recognize that updates along the way may have felt sparse or gotten lost among other communications. We also recognize it will be helpful for us all to have a more complete background on its history and process.

The October issue of AIC News will include a more detailed look at the history of our Code of Ethics, its importance to AIC, and the work that has brought us to this point. Please look out for that in October.

We encourage all members to continue to engage as we move into this next phase.

And for now, please RSVP and join us on September 30 to talk about the results of the recent vote on voting rights.

We look forward to listening and hearing from you.
