Hello and Welcome, once again, to the Laser Discussion Group,

We are looking forward to some great talks during the Laser Cleaning Applications for Conservation session at the AIC meeting this Spring.

In the meantime, as we plan for other meetings, webinars or talks, we're interested in what laser-related topics interest you? For example, are you hoping for an introductory talk on lasers, are you curious about the difference between NdYAG and ErYAG lasers or, perhaps, you'd just like to see some case studies? Please respond to this discussion thread with potential topics you'd like to see covered.

Please also feel free to use this forum to share your current laser cleaning projects. We'd love to see images of what you're working on now!

    Many thanks,
    Adam, Holly, Eve and Colleen

    Hi,
I'd be very interested to see examples of laser cleaning projects carried out with Nd:YAG, Er:YAG and also higher-average power active fibre lasers - it would be good to see examples where laser cleaning has worked well and also hear about some of the practical considerations, particularly in relation to running larger-scale laser cleaning projects on-site. It would also be great to see what people are working on now and hear why they decided to use laser cleaning - it can also be helpful to hear about projects where laser cleaning was tested but unsuccessful.
    Thanks.

Hello, It would be super useful to hear from those who might have previously rented, or those who actively rent their laser units for projects on the East Coast. Simple details like: type of units available, rates, scheduling parameters and/or contact info for follow-up. But also super curious about any special insurance or technical safety parameters.

    Many thanks!

    Hi Sari,

We (Lynton Lasers) have one Compact Phoenix system with Nd:YAG (1064nm) and Er:YAG (2940nm) laser handpieces available for demos/trials/projects etc. in the United States. The system is based in Philadelphia. Please contact me directly for costs. I'm sure there are others on this group who could comment on logistics, safety etc. having used the system before. I know the guys from El.En.'s Light for Art division also have systems based on the east coast and you could also try G C Lasers in Chicago. These lasers are all class 4 systems (in terms of safety) so a number of safety controls must be put in place to reduce risk to an acceptable level when laser cleaning.

    Hope this helps.

Greetings Adam, Holly, Eve, Colleen, and the AIC community,

I think an introductory talk about lasers and the difference between NdYAG and ErYAG lasers (and their applications) would be extremely beneficial for those of us who are considering using this procedure in our projects.
In my case, I am researching and learning about this tool, but having information from professionals who have already used it and knowing their opinion would be invaluable.
Thank you very much for the opportunity.

    Hi Rodrigo,

As a starting point I would recommend having a look at the introductory videos available in the Laser Discussion Group Library. These include: 'Introduction to Lasers and Laser Cleaning', 'Nd:YAG Laser Cleaning', 'Er:YAG Laser Cleaning' and 'Laser Safety in Conservation'. There is also a useful bibliography. The videos were put together in advance of the Laser Cleaning workshop held at the AIC conference in Salt Lake City in 2024 and provide an excellent starting point. I agree that hearing from other professionals who use/have used laser cleaning is invaluable - the type of projects, reasons for using laser cleaning, cleaning protocols, what worked well, what didn't etc. Hopefully, this discussion group will provide an ideal platform for conservators worldwide to share their experiences informally.

    Thanks,

    Martin

Thanks for comments Sari and Rodrigo! Sari, I think that other colleagues who have more experience with renting lasers will respond to your specific question soon. Rodrigo, we're glad to know that you've been reviewing the introductory videos and that they have been helpful. We're hoping to have a webinar before too long that will present some case studies to help illustrate the differences between the two and how they have been applied to different cleaning problems. Please stay tuned for information about that. We are also chose talks for the AIC session on lasers, which showcase the use of different laser types. They will be Thursday, April 30th from 9AM to 10AM, if you are able to attend in-person or on-line.

Please keep your questions and interests coming!

    Best,

    Holly

    Greetings!

I had the opportunity to borrow/rent a Compact Phoenix laser from Lynton for a specific project this winter. I've also tested the Elen LQS.  Having the laser onsite really helped to make the case for the purchase of a laser - which was just recently approved by my museum's leadership. I'm happy to discuss the details of my experience if anyone is interested!

    Hi Liz,

We did this as well, although many years ago. We rented a laser for a specific project and then ended up having a patron give funding to purchase it because they were so impressed by how it worked. We also told them that we would host workshops and be open to having other conservators in the area try it out on specific cleaning projects. That helped to seal the deal.

    Best,

    Holly
