Posting this on behalf of the National Scouting Museum:
The historic Villa Philmonté at Philmont Scout Ranch (Cimarron, NM) recently sustained significant damage during an intense hailstorm on August 10. Among other impacts, 100+ panes of glass on over 30 windows were shattered by hail. As a result, we have identified 17 rugs/carpets inside the building that were impacted by broken glass – including V'Soske, Persian, and Native American rugs, animal taxidermy (bear/bobcat) rugs, and wall-to-wall wool carpeting.
Before the museum is safe to reopen to visitors, extensive glass remediation will need to take place. Unfortunately, it seems that full removal and replacement of wall-to-wall carpeting and taxidermy will be required (all of which are non-historic reproductions). However, we are hoping to avoid having to replace the remaining area rugs with thorough cleaning (most of which are reproductions, but several of our Navajo/Hopi rugs are originals). With the exception of stair runners, all rugs can be rolled and transported off site for treatment if needed.
Does anyone happen to have experience working with carpet cleaners in a museum capacity that you would be willing to recommend? New Mexico (especially Northern NM) is ideal, but we are willing to expand our search radius to surrounding states too. If so, please reach out to me via email at ruaidhri.crofton@scouting.org or via telephone at (575) 376-2281 ext. 51053.
Thank you!
All the best,
