  • 1.  Post processing programing thoughts and suggestions

    Hello all,

    Currently, the standard post processing programming of Bridge/Camera Raw, Lightroom, and Photoshop has been a lovely addition to conservation documentation. I was curious if there have been any changes or suggestions that could be made as alternatives. Whether it becomes camera dependent or not, with new technology and programing changing everyday what would be something worth looking into away from the adobe cloud that some of you have had success with. I look forward to hearing from you.

    Hi Kyle,

    Coming from a digitization perspective (and previous production environments) two programs I've had success with have been Capture One and Photo Mechanic, but I find I always go back to Photoshop for certain tasks (such as stitching, digitally restoring or focus stacking), although I've tried alternatives for that work, I find Photoshop my favorite for more detailed or complex post processing.

    Hi Kyle,

    I've become quite fond of using Capture One; unless advanced retouching is required it fulfills almost all my conservation imaging needs. Especially the live view which is essential for non-visible techniques such as infrared photography.

    Hi all,

    I would just like to share with you a couple of post-processing alternatives. For stitching I use a software called Autopano Giga. It is an extremely powerful and fast software (compared to Photoshop) which was originally designed to be used with the motorized head, for making gigapixel images (as the name suggests). However, I've used it with images taken on a regular tripod with arbitrary overlapping (up to 1/3 of the previous frame) and had amazing results. On top of its excellent performance, from mid 2023 it can be downloaded for free, since the company discontinued the production of motorized heads.
    For focus stacking (usually with macro photography) I use Helicon Focus which is incredibly fast and accurate (again compared to Photoshop). It is based on paid licences but comes with a fully functional 30-day trial period. It doesn't hurt to try it.
