Save the date! Microfading Tester: Gaining Practical Experience. 1-day practical workshop,
Wednesday 23rd September 2026.
Modern 1, National Galleries of Scotland, Edinburgh
Bookings will soon go live for this workshop.
Description
This full day workshop will provide participants with practical experience on three iterations of the microfading tester (MFT) instrument commonly in use today: the original Whitmore MFT design, the Retroreflective MFT, and the Fotonowy MFT.
The audience for this workshop includes museum, gallery and Conservation professionals, who are prospective or emerging MFT users, as well as those interested in alternatives to their current MFT setups.
Following the same pattern as the workshops we have run at the Field Museum Chicago and at the AIC Conference in Montreal, the bulk of the workshop will be dedicated to gaining hands-on experience with the Whitmore MFT, Retroreflective MFT, and Fotonowy MFT. Attendees will have three c. 90-minute practical sessions, one on each instrument, and will work in small groups with expert instructors to begin learning how to operate the instrument (including assessing the light source, establishing test parameters, focusing the light spot, choosing test locations and conducting the tests). Information will also be shared on the acquisition, assembly, portability, and maintenance of each instrument. The workshop will include group discussion of general MFT concepts and case studies, and a Q&A.
Lunch will be provided.
The workshop is organized by the Microfading Tester International Discussion Group, which is supported by the American Institute for Conservation and AIC's Preventive Care Network and The Getty Conservation Institute.
