To elaborate a bit on Sarah's comment, with which I agree, you might reduce the press or possible impressions/damage of the clips by putting a piece of thick, firm polyfelt between the quilt and the clip.

Dear Judy, You raise a good question that many collections probably also ask. One thing I'd like to point out -- since you say the coat has a lot of insect damage, the "sand" may actually be insect frass, rather than part of the war-history of the coat.
