Dear Melissa,The solution shown in the link that that you found is quite good. I think you could modify this by looking at standards and brackets from U-Line or other industrial suppliers -- these would be the same idea, but heavier. You are right -- the shelf brackets shown would not be strong enough ...

To elaborate a bit on Sarah's comment, with which I agree, you might reduce the press or possible impressions/damage of the clips by putting a piece of thick, firm polyfelt between the quilt and the clip.

One thing I'd like to point out -- since you say the coat has a lot of insect damage, the "sand" may actually be insect frass, rather than part of the war-history of the coat.
