  • 1.  adhesive for a glass hurricane shade.

    Hello all,

A client has sent me a broken repro hurricane shade for a kerosene lamp.

My first instinct was to suggest that they just replace it.

It is a clean break, but large.

A jeweler  suggested glass adhesive for windshield repair

Has anyone had an experience with this type of damage?

    Look forward to any ideas.

    Best,

    Roberta

A lot depends on whether they wish to keep the lamp for display only or use it. If there's going to be any light source inside that generates heat they should replace the glass shade as you suggest.

If it is not to be used, then a conservation grade glass adhesive such as Hxtal epoxy could work well.

    Hope this helps

I am new to this group, and answering this from the perspective of a personal property appraiser retiring after 22 years.  If it is a repro shade, they should just replace it.  I am assuming  there is nothing historically important about it.  From a valuation point of view, there would be no advantage to keeping a repaired glass shade.  In fact, the lamp would be worth more with a good, functional replacement.

    My first choice would be

HXTAL NYL-1 Epoxy Optically Clear Adhesive

    Hello Roberta,
We have extensive experience with both Paraloid B72 and Hxtal Nyl-1. Depending on the type of break and how it joins together; plus how and where the object will be displayed, these are two options you could consider.

Thank you for posting to the C2C Care Community. As the current monitor of this list, but as a painting conservator, I reached out to our expert list to see what they had to say about your issue. Ingrid Neuman, Senior Conservator at the Rhode Island School of Design Museum, kindly responded in this way:

"this glass shade could be repaired by taping it using  little surgical tape "bandaids" across the break and then using the optical glass epoxy  called HXTAL-NyL and using a toothpick dropping minute drops of the adhesive along the break line so it can wick in by means of capillary action.  The residue can be cleaned off with a dry swab. The glue needs about 5 days to cure so the object should not be disturbed during this time.  The surgical tape bandaids can be removed with a scalpel. "

I also agree that consideration should be given to the fact that you are talking about a reproduction shade. I believe that
your instinct to simply replace it is valid.

I hope the comments from colleagues has been useful. Good luck!
