    Hello colleagues,

I'm wondering if any of you use a lightweight cordless HEPA vacuum around your collections. Our art handlers are interested in using one for crevices and hard, non-collection surfaces. We were looking at a Dyson brand model, but the battery life appears to be incredibly short, based on reviews.

If you are using something like this, I'm curious about pros and cons of models.

    With thanks,

I have been using a corded Festool dust extractor as my go-to vacuum cleaner for decades and am very pleased with its service.

Meg, have you ever used the Festool with a rheostat for vacuuming art objects? My department is considering buying these instead of Nilfisks going forward and I would love input about their suitability for use with textiles, if you have any!

Yes, Marina, I use my Festool dust extractor/vacuum cleaner to vacuum textiles and textile components (textile upholstery on wood furniture) - my model comes with a knob that you twist to lower/raise the suction strength. Therefore, I do not need to use a power rheostat with it. My model is now over 15 years old and going as strong (or as weak) as I need.

I am sure the newest models of the Festool dust extractor also have built in the means to lower/raise the suction power. I purchased an extra hose so that one can be drying from being washed out/air dried while I continue vacuuming with the 2nd hose. The hose and the power cord are also very long and so much more convenient to use.

    Regards,

    Meg

Marina, I use the Festool Cleantec CT 36 E HEPA dust extractor for low suction work on art objects regularly. While it's bigger than the Nilfisk that most of us are used to, I like it better, and the price is lower. I also use if for my suction device, on a higher flow rate, although rarely at its full capacity. Given that Festool is made for a much larger industry than our own, there are a much wider array of attachments and uses.

As we're in the same area, you're more than welcome to come by and look at it and try it out, just contact me off-list.

We needed a cordless vacuum for cleaning collections that are stored in buildings that have no electricity. I researched many cordless vacuums that also had HEPA filtration. This one was the most economical model for us, and I've been very pleased with it.
