  • 1.  Seeking Advice on Health and Safety Training

    I plan to update Health and Safety training for our staff and would welcome your input.  The Conservation Center for Art and Historic Artifacts is a large, regional non-profit laboratory, with 35-40 staff members at any one time. Currently, our training is provided in-house with occasional consultations with H+S experts.

         -- How do you accomplish H+S training in your institution or business?  

         -- Do you utilize online training modules, free and paid, that you could recommend? 

         -- Do you have a budget and, if so, could you share the number?

    It's fantastic to hear about your commitment to updating Health and Safety (H&S) training at the Conservation Center for Art and Historic Artifacts. I recently had the opportunity to enhance our H&S training through a program at the  SDTC , and I highly recommend their approach.

    1. Training Approach: They use a comprehensive system combining in-house training with expert consultations, which keeps their team well-versed in the latest safety protocols. This could be very beneficial for your team too.

    2. Online Training Modules: The Center also offers training via live Zoom classes, allowing for interactive sessions that can be attended remotely. This method has proven effective for maintaining engagement and delivering high-quality training directly to participants, regardless of their location.

    3. Budgeting: For budgeting, the Staff Development Training Center was particularly helpful. They offered several cost-effective options that maximized value without compromising on the quality or comprehensiveness of the training. I suggest contacting them for the best budgeting advice for your specific needs.

    Based on my positive experience with their structured and effective training methods, I think exploring a similar strategy could significantly enhance your H&S training program.

    Hello Barb! I am the monitor this month but unfortunately I don't have much to add. As part of a larger institution, our lab can request trainings from the university's Environment, Health and Safety department. Some of these are available as self-study units and seem to be accessible without university affiliation; similar resources are likely available from other places as well though they seem to be more university-specific and less conservation-specific than might be ideal.

    I think that posting this question in the AIC Member Community or Global Conservation Forum as well as C2CC might generate more conversation too.

    I think that posting this question again on various platforms might generate a conversation that is really necessary these days post-covid.

    Also, many colleagues probably would like to join the discussions online every month at the American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA).

    Since 2016, the Washington Conservation Guild (WCG) , the Potomac Section of the American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA), the Smithsonian Institution's Office of Safety, Health and Environmental Management (SI-OSHEM) and the Smithsonian National Collections Program have collaborated with the Lunder Conservation Center to host an annual conference addressing health and safety concerns in collection care.

    Hi Barbara and All,

    As part of the AIC Health and Safety (H&S) Network leadership, thank you for the shout out! I wanted to let everyone know that we have been trying to create a H&S course tailored to museum professionals for a long time. The Network, along with the American Institute for Hygiene Association's Museum Working Group, has been in talks with a lab safety company about the possibility of a collaboration to create such a course, and we have applied to FAIC for funding. This won't help your immediate need, but could be a possibility in the future.

    My original post was in 2020, however, obtaining reasonably priced training that both satisfies regulatory bodies and our specialized needs is still an issue.  Thank you to all who replied here with resources and word of new initiatives.  I've got alot to catch up on!
