Welcome to the Architecture Specialty Group

AIC's Architecture Specialty Group develops and promotes the conservation of immovable cultural heritage, including buildings, monuments, outdoor sculpture, and related sites. Architectural conservation is a discipline that addresses the unique conservation challenges of structures and sites. These works may be built on a vast scale; they are often exposed to weather and evolving climate factors; and projects often require research and cooperation with other diverse fields. The group provides a forum for the exchange of information yielded from practice and research to further the profession and practice standards of architectural conservation.

Events

We organize programming at AIC’s Annual Meeting and works with partner organizations to facilitate other regional events. In past years, sessions have followed the overall meeting themes or concentrated on a unique theme, often as part of joint sessions with other specialty groups. Additional conference activities have included discussion groups, technical sessions, and architectural walking tours. Topics include treatment, research and analysis, emergency response, case studies, new technology, and other issues. Programs can include paper presentations, workshops, as well as an annual business meeting and social events. ASG provides scholarships and support for emerging professionals to engage them in the field and participate at annual meetings.

Resources

We maintain several online resources.

  • The Architectural Conservation section of the AIC Conservation Wiki is currently under development, and we welcome edits and new content. The wiki provides information regarding the preservation and conservation of all types of immovable cultural heritage. In October 2018, we agreed to partner with APT to help develop our Wiki content. We look forward to the collaboration!

  • Members can join the ASG online community to participate in an open forum for conservation and preservation professionals. The forum is open to members at no extra charge.
